Kenmare Lost Sheep Triathlon Event, Co. Kerry September 7th 2013

The 11th annual Lost Sheep Half Iron Man event took place in fair weather in Kenmare this weekend.Typically enough the rain arrived before the end of the day.And boy did it rain. From 12 noon onwards the showers pelted the runners as they ran to the square and on to the finish line. A punishing course the Lost Sheep takes competitors through the beautiful countryside around Kenmare Bay. At the end of the Triathlon season this race attracts serious triathletes. They push themselves through what is considered the most difficult event in the country before the season ends and athletes can rest up for the winter.
Kenmare Bay
A 1.9km swim in Kenmare Bay kicks off the day.This is followed by an 80km cycle up the Healy Pass and what might be described as “hairy” hairpin bends in the descent. The run takes its way around Kenmare in an out and back route 21km long with a killer climb in the middle to crucify already tired legs. I was there doing some Kerry event photography and I was tired just looking at the athletes.
My brother Breiffne O’Donnell a physiotherapist from Kildare came in 36th position. He performed a personnel best in his final event of the season. He took part in the Iron Man 70.3 Haugesund Norway event in July which certainly advanced his strength and stamina for this event. He was supported by a loud group of about 20 friends and family who travelled to cheer him through the ordeal. He was also supported by this event photographer who snapped a few pictures of Breiffne as he made his way around the circuit.

Many club members took part from all over the country with the Cork, Waterford and Wicklow Triathlon clubs having large numbers taking part. Many came across the line accompanied by members of their families to triumphant roars or approval. Tears and sweat mixed with heavy rain united all competitors. It was a family affair for sure with many siblings and couples competing alongside each other. I for one found it inspirational and uplifting. With only a couple of 5km races under my belt I am considering the options for next year. Maybe I would be able to build up my resolve and stamina over the coming winter to give it a go. I have the best advice at my fingertips with my 2 brothers notching up the triathlons, ultra marathons and Ironmen under their collective belts in the past few years. Who knows.
