Kerry Hurling Final Senior Replay 2013
St. Brendans Ardfert V Lixnaw
Usually by this time of year the Garveys Supervalu Senior Kerry Hurling Championship would be done and dusted. However a draw two weeks ago between Lixnaw and St. Brendans of Ardfert meant that both teams would do battle again, to see who would be crowned Kerry Hurling Kingpins and bring the Neilus Flynn trophy back to their respective parish. Both teams have had a lean spell recently with Lixnaw last winning the title in 2007. Even more so for St. Brendans who last tasted glory in the county senior level in 1990.
All roads again led to Kerry GAA Headquarters at Austin Stack Park in Tralee Co.Kerry for the keenly awaited hurling contest. Thankfully the inclement weather from the morning eased and by throw-in time the day had brightened although there was still a stiff breeze, which was to Lixnaw’s advantage in the first half. In a low scoring half St. Brendans drew first blood but Lixnaw went into the interval leading by 0 – 05 to 0 – 03. By this stage Lixnaw were down to 14 men, with Maurice Corridon being sent to the line for a foul near the dugout. They extended their lead to 0-07 to 0-04 and thing were looking good for the Lixnaw men. St. Brendans pegged a few points by the arrival of the last quarter, and it was all square at 0-07 each. From then on it was all Ardfert who pulled away with some impressive mid-fielding and valuable scores, Lixnaw had no answer to the skill and hunger of their opponents. It was the blue & white coloured flags that were waving as St. Brendans held tight to their lead and fought hard to keep it, till the end. Final score 0-13 to 0-08.
Rapturous celebrations that greeted the final whistle, as the Ardfert supporters surrounded their heroes on the pitch. Their captain Eamonn Corridon was presented with the Neilus Flynn trophy and Darren Dineen was named Garvey’s Supervalu man of the match, a worthy winner. (Presentation in Garvey’s Supervalu during the coming week). They go on now to represent Kerry Hurling in the Munster Intermediate Championship. All the best of luck Ardfert! Keep the fire in your bellies burning and you’ll be a force to be reckoned with!
Meanwhile the curtain falls on another Senior Kerry Hurling Championship. The County Final is a special day in the Kerry GAA calendar and long may it continue.
